IT WAS MY 21ST BIRTHDAY!
We went on this sea canoe tour to see the Hongs of Phang Nga (I think). We kayaked to three hongs in total, and played in the water and ate between trips. It was super relaxing and seeing the sheer cliffs of the hongs was really awe inspiring. To get into them, we waited until low tide, then kayaked (lying down!!) through caves to get into the interior of the island, where the water was super shallow and calm. A hong is like a island donut! In the caves, there were tons of bats on the ceiling sleeping and the sides were lined with oysters. It started raining REALLY hard during the second hong, but it was still super fun because we were totally soaked anyway and the hongs were even more beautiful in the downpour. We passed a group of chinese kayakers that didn't get ponchos and were looking pretty miserable..hahaha. We played in the water by the boat and my dad dislocated his shoulder while trying to play chicken...Some guy saw a meter-long water monitor, but I didn't see it. As the sun was setting, we made "offerings" out of banana leaves and orchids to release in the water of one of the hongs. When it became completely dark, we paddled into a hong, where we lit them and let them float around a bit. Because it was completely dark, we could see the phosphorescent plankton in the water! It was pretty magical seeing the water glow like that...

Pretty amazing trip it looks like you've been having. A little less so in the case of beaches full of tourists.
